Saving Pack 3 Professional Bassoon Reeds ARUNVAL Hard
In 1999, in Pobla Llarga (Valencia - Spain), Ximo Vidal (superior bassoon teacher), together with Carmen Sanz and Alfredo de la Asunción, began the project of creating their own brand of reeds for bassoon and oboe. A name for these new reeds had to be found and what better than ARUNVAL, a name that indicated the raw material of the reeds (Arundo donax) and their origin (Valencia). Selection of the Arundo donax The search for quality cane tube has been a priority since the beginning of this project. We work mostly with French and Spanish Arundo donax, doing the whole process (collection and drying) in the case of bassoon reed tubes. We have land in Pobla Llarga where we are growing Arundo donax, both for the oboe and for the bassoon, to improve their quality. Read more Density as a decisive factor But the final quality of the Arundo donax segment, which will first become a shovel and then a cane, is achieved after checking its density segment by segment. After opening the reed tube in three parts, we check one by one if it has the minimum and maximum density to obtain a quality future reed. Thanks to this hard work, we can classify future reeds into soft, medium, strong and we discard all those that have low or high density, segments that would cause the reed to not work. Read more Canes preparation Machines manufactured for each of the processes Pre-plumbing, gouging, sharpening (in the case of the bassoon) and the shape are the processes prior to assembling the reed. These processes are carried out with machines specifically manufactured for each cane preparation step. In each of the steps, all the canes that present any imperfection are discarded to assure a good oboe or bassoon reed. Artisans of the Valencian Community The assembly of reeds, both bassoon and oboe, is a process that requires tranquility and know-how. During all these years we have been improving this process little by little and always doing everything in an artisanal way as shown by the two documents of artisan qualification of the Valencian Community that we have (2939 and 4614). Our quality control is so demanding that only 30% is considered optimal for our clients. Read more
